So, the kids are on Spring Break, and in a few short months they’ll be home for Summer. When they’re home, it seems like by hour four they’ve run out of things to do. Seize this opportunity and bring your family to work for a day. Why would you want to do that? Let’s take a look.
Bringing Your Family to Work Shows Them What You Do
I bet some or all of your family is curious about what you do and where you do it. For me, most of my family still can’t explain what I do and usually tell people I do “computer stuff.” To their credit, I do, but sometimes it’s easier to show your family what your life is like at work. The next time you have to work late or can’t make it to a school function, the kids are more likely to be sympathetic when they understand what your responsibilities are. Once they can see the process in action for themselves, they’ll be able to connect your responsibilities with the time you spend away from home.
Bringing your kids to work is such a great idea that many large companies even have designated days for this.
It Could Help Sow the Seeds of Entrepreneurship
You may have a budding entrepreneur, a kidpreneur, in your home. By taking them to work with you, they can see the wheels of business in operation. They may see how things work well enough to make plans for their own business process or solution, giving them an advantage in starting early. This is why over 200,000 kids annually visit their parent’s workplace in Canada alone.
Plan Ahead for the Best Experience
Take the time to plan ahead for the family day at work. You can consider each member and figure out a way that they can help contribute. This promotes understanding and gives them a sense of accomplishment. Soon they may feel like a work partner, and be a patient resource when you are working late or even need a little assistance.
Bringing your family to work for a day can bring a family closer together. It can help members of the family understand what you do, and perhaps even launch a future entrepreneur into a lifelong pursuit of success. I’d love to hear from you and how bring your family to work day went.
