With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I started reflecting on the most important relationships in my life—my family.
I’ve spent decades refining leadership skills for my business, but what if we applied those same principles at home?
What ‘Parenting as a Startup’ Looks Like
-
Set a Family Vision & Core Values – Every great company has a mission. Why shouldn’t your family? Ours was simple: support, integrity, and adventure. It became the filter for how we made decisions.
-
Hold Weekly Family ‘Team Meetings’ – Just like I would with my team where we have check ins throughout the week, we started in my family weekly Sunday check-ins—what’s going well, what needs adjusting, meal plans for the week and what’s coming up next week. It kept us connected and also gave me great ways to connect with my family such as “how did that test go” proactively since I knew about it already.
-
Celebrate ‘Small Wins’ Just Like a Business – Startups celebrate milestones—why not do the same at home? From school achievements to personal growth moments, we acknowledged progress, not just big events.
Being an entrepreneur taught me that strong teams thrive on trust, communication, and shared goals. Shouldn’t our families have the same foundation?
