Crush Your Goals This Year

Smart goals

I am kind of a nerd (shocking I know), but I really love the end of the year. Yes, I love the holidays and tasty food, but I have really enjoyed the annual planning process. I do one with my company StringCan Interactive and another with my family. My family, my team, and I invest a lot of time and energy into planning out our goals for the upcoming year. The way I view my life is that there are three aspects of your life; self, family, and business/work. It’s important to set goals, but you also need to have accountability and visibility. It’s imperative that you review them on a monthly or quarterly basis, at least. As a company we meet quarterly and progress is visible and spoken to every Monday at our Leadership meeting. For my family, after our annual retreat we talk about our vision boards once per quarter. Here are some of my goals, and some killer tips, for you to crush any goal you set this year, or next month!

My Goals

I actually came up with 11 things for my personal life, and 11 for my business for 2019. I will share just a few of those and the steps I’m taking to absolutely make them a reality.

Run a 5k

If you know me, you’re thinking “whaaaaat?!” I know! I used to think this was crazy but a team member, Shana O’Connor, who has run several marathons and is heading to Boston this spring, really inspired me to lace up, download Runkeeper, and get moving. I have been running for a few weeks and my eldest daughter Lexi joins me. She likes running ahead of me knowing I lose the connection to our shared set of Airpods if I don’t keep up! With this app, our trainer’s name is Erin and we’ve been running with her for a few weeks now training for our first 5k and she has helped both Lexi and me stay motivated during each running session. We often joke each night wondering what Erin has in store for us the next morning – which creates excitement.

Tips:

Get a buddy, download any tools you need, and make baby steps every single day no matter how small!

Giving Back

I don’t want to be a talking head when it comes to donating and giving back. Sure I budget money and time from my business, as well as my personal life, to support charitable organizations. It’s important to me to do more this year and to push myself and my company. I’m currently working on a project to support nonprofit organizations using the skills and abilities of my team. I’ve asked my team to help keep me accountable and to make time as well. Everyone is really excited about this new plan!

Tips:

Spread the work, sometimes you need to outsource a few pieces to get momentum. I started with an email and after some conversations I have revised my original (too lofty right now) goal and am starting with something more attainable. It’s a big goal of mine to start my pro bono project as soon as I can!

Lower My Body Fat Percentage

My goal of running a 5k is great, but that won’t necessarily get me to be a healthier person on a more holistic level. I want to drink less booze, to eat healthier, and to have more fun. A few of my 22 goals tie in to this overall goal, but by chunking down my bigger goal into smaller goals makes eating this “healthy” elephant so much easier. I am getting tested at the gym and using my apps and gadgets to help me make progress every day. My two favorite apps to help me reach my goal are My Fitness Pal where I set daily goals based on my exercising for my macro and micro-nutrients and FitPlan that gives me direction on what to do in the gym and how to do it. Both apps’ customer service and online communities are amazing.

Tips:

Chunk down bigger goals into smaller ones. Even if you accomplish a smaller goal, celebrate that as a huge win! Take time to be proud of the progress you’re making.

I’d love to hear from you and what tips you have for me on goal setting and crushing!
