Organizing Your Personal Life to Run Like Your Professional Life

time management

Have you ever woken up on a Sunday morning and felt like your home life isn’t as relaxing as it should be? Whether it’s chores piling up, work finding a way to consume your weekends, or your kids needing your support at their all-day cross country race on Saturday. The weekends never quite seem to be restful.

I found myself in the position where my work life was operating more efficiently than my personal life. I enjoyed having all of my activities for the week planned out in a calendar and being able to receive input from my team members on decisions. After having this realization and after hundreds of restless weekends, I knew it was time for a change. This is when I started organizing my personal life to run like my professional life.  In order to do so, I began doing 4 distinct things.

Schedule Turn-It-Off Time

The first thing that I did to run my personal life like my professional life was to schedule my time off work. Figure out what you have to get done off the clock, how much time it is going to take you, and when you plan on doing it. This will help you get things done effectively and efficiently as well as clear up more free time to relax and enjoy yourself.

Get Family Input

The second thing that I began doing was consulting with my family members on big decisions. This was a major change because I became accustomed to making bigger decisions by myself. Now, where the decision is still ultimately mine, I like to get feedback from each of my family members on their opinion. Even your youngest child might be able to provide some valuable input on a family decision.

Grow Your Family’s Strengths

In my professional life, I put a great amount of time and effort into developing the people on my team. I figured that if I was going to run my personal life like my professional life, I should do the same with my family. Helping your family members discover their strengths and brainstorming ways that they can leverage them in their day-to-day lives can eventually lead to some at-home tasks being taken off of your shoulders. I’ve done this with my oldest daughter helping her learn about business, as well as, hiring a coach for her singing.

Love Unconditionally

Finally, treat each of your family members like they are the most important person in the universe. When they are talking to you, turn towards them and give them your undivided attention. Put down that damn phone which took me way too long to learn. This will help you become more connected. It also helps kids learn to interact with their whole self. No one likes being talked to over a device.

By using these tips to run your personal life like your professional life, you regain control of your time, and your family becomes closer. Your family is the most important thing in the world. Give them the best version of you that you can!

I’d love to hear from you and what you do to treat your personal life like your professional life!
